Jon Gutwillig - The Disco Biscuits Guitarist
""The “patient” starts to explain how the Biscuits have escalated from a normal jam band to super jam band status since Jon Gutwillig, bassist Marc Brownstein, keyboardist Aron Magner, and original drummer Sam Altman (current drummer Allen Aucoin was inducted into the band in ‘05 after a drum-off in Atlantic City) met at the University of Pennsylvania over a decade ago. When I admit that I was unaware of the existence of super jam bands, Gutwillig throws some cultural knowledge on the table.""

Shows
In the last 3 days I've seen Cave In, Baroness, Earthless, Narrows, Tim Hecker, Aidan Baker, US Christmas and Trap Them. 3 pretty solid shows. I'm very happy I saw Narrows because I thought the album was decent but they absolutely killed it live. The highlights were definitely Cave In and without a doubt, Earthless, who I thought played one of the best sets I've seen this year.
And I'm seeing Phish on Wednesday (1st timer), and the week after Do Make Say Think is playing the church sanctuary on Monday; Pelican/Black Cobra/Disappearer on Tuesday, and Russian Circles/Young Widows on Friday. Pumped.
Anyway, here is the new Mercury Program album which I didn't even know was coming out and it's really really good.
Rock on.

Shrinebuilder last night...
So awesome. The show was in a room that's about 1/3 the size of the church at club sonar in baltimore. Good tunes from every band and a decent crowd except for the cocksucker standing near me up front that ended up getting punched in the glasses.
Earthride came on first and after their set I immediately wanted to go buy a harley and pound booze. The lead singer was like a B movie version of Phil Anselmo who raised his drink as an invitation to pound... and then went right for the sippy straw. Awesome dude. I've never seen them before but would go out of my way to see them again anytime they come around.
I have been listening to US Christmas' Eat The Low Dogs for a while but never had the chance to see them until last night. The live version of this band sounds much different than the recorded version and each has it's good and bad. The vocals don't transfer over that well but the songs sound a lot heavier. I'm happy I get another chance to see them on thursday with Baroness at the church.
Shrinebuilder was amazing. I mean, with these four dudes together on a stage it would be hard to go wrong but they exceeded any ridiculous expectations I had going in. They somehow made these songs sound even better than they do on the record, which is easily one of the best of the year. The heavy parts were heavier, the groove parts could have gone on forever, the vocals were spot on, and dale's drumming is, well... ridiculous. Getting home at 4am sucks but it was worth it to see these dudes rock out.
You can check out Shrinebuilder in NYC at Le Poisson Rogue on Sunday night with Rwake and Liturgy or in Austin, TX on Monday. Hopefully more dates are announced. And hopefully those dates are for a Shrinebuilder, Om, Neurosis, Melvins tour.

Belong - October Language
When I checked my mail today this and Axe To Fall were waiting for me. I'm listening to this one right now and it sounds AMAZING. Very happy that Geographic North put this out on vinyl. Listen if you like Fennesz, Tim Hecker, etc...
Jerry Fuchs RIP
I was sitting in horrendous traffic after the Eagles game on sunday night when I got an email from Todd with the same subject as this post and I was shocked. Jerry Fuchs, drummer extraordinaire, was dead at age 34. Brooklyn Vegan has some additional info about it as well as some great videos of him doing what he loved.
Gerhardt Fuchs grew up playing the drums in Georgia and went on to perform with bands that toured across the country, but it was in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that he forged his reputation as a dynamic, driving drummer widely esteemed by his peers.
And it was in that same neighborhood, in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge, that Mr. Fuchs, known as Jerry, fell to his death on Sunday morning [11/8] in the elevator shaft of an industrial building on Berry Street. - NY Times
I didn't know Jerry but I was lucky enough to see him play about 2 months ago when Maserati came through Philly. In the brief conversation I had with him following the show it was incredibly easy to tell what a kind and genuine person he was. RIP.
